Today we’re announcing $2.1 billion of capital investment led by General Catalyst and JPMorganChase’s Strategic Investment Group, which oversees the direct equity investing for its Security and Resiliency Initiative.
This is a major milestone for Re:Build, and I want to explain not just what it is, but why it matters and what it obligates us to do.
We built this company to ensure that the next generation of important products are made, at scale, in America. That purpose is unchanged. This capital expands our ability to manufacture hard tech and to launch new industrial enterprises—the way we have with Slate, Neon Aero, and others. More importantly, it gives us the runway to accomplish what we set out to do in 2020: build durable, domestic manufacturing capability where almost none exists today. While over 2,000 people work at Re:Build and our associated companies today, our ambition is to be 10x, and then 100x this scale.
It took America roughly 40 years to degrade its industrial base to its current state. We cannot build that back in three, five, or even ten years. Manufacturing capability cannot be stood up overnight; standing up manufacturing at scale is an iterative exercise with long time constants. This is the core reason short-term capital hollowed out American manufacturing in the first place—it optimized for a quick return against a system whose feedback loops run over a decade or more. Capital that matches the time constant of our customers’ work is not a nicety; it is a precondition for success. This investment gives us the ability to commit resources over the time frame that our work requires.
There are few companies with the means to understand and build hard tech that will scale over this horizon. Re:Build is one of them.
Our democracy depends on an economy built on domestic production. That is true for two reasons. First, the social and political resilience that comes from a strong middle class depends on the existence of good jobs that come from making things. Second, a nation that cannot produce cannot remain a competitive peer to the countries that have out-produced us for decades. The lost art we are rebuilding — knowing how to design a product and then building it well, economically, and at scale in America — was forgotten over decades of offshoring. Re:Build exists to strengthen this muscle. This capital lets us go faster and harder at that work.
